Our History

Bakerite Inc. was established in 1946 by Wong Tong Liong, an immigrant from Guang Zhou, China. Prior to his founding of Bakerite Inc., he and his friends first worked as a baker in Japanese-ran bakery during their regime in the Philippines. With the little money that he was salaried, he managed to save enough money to start a small bakery.

An interesting anecdote during his starting years in the bakery business. A Caucasian trader whose nationality was not clear, although it was already during the time when the American General Douglas McArthur had fulfilled their promise of coming back to Manila. The trader went around Manila offered Mr. Wong 100 sacks of flour. But Mr. Wong frankly told the trader that he had no money to pay him up front, the trader then agreed to to come back in a months time. As luck would have it, the bakery was able to process and sell all 100 sacks in a weeks time. Mr. Wong went around Manila looking for the trader, who eventually he did find and paid immediately. The trader felt that Mr. Wong was a man to be trusted, so the trader proposed to sell him an oven. The payment term was again in question, the trader proposed that Mr. Wong look for him when the payment is in order. And the rest, is history.
